Self Care and Balance

Self Care and Balance

By Chelsea Gorsky

Some people have it, many people want it, and others don’t believe it exists.

Add children into the mix and finding balance seems almost impossible.

For me, having some balance provides me the mind space to be present for my family. I am currently thinking a lot about how I can find a balance that feels right in my life. I don't think I am alone in wanting it all - self care, exercise, rewarding work, uninterrupted time with family, time to clean the house, homemade food that the whole family can eat, alone time with my significant other...and so much more. Balance doesn’t come from having everything, rather from having enough of what we need, when we need it. How can we do that?

This is what I have decided will work for me: determine my top priority and plan around that. Right now, self care is non negotiable and has become my priority.

I have found that if I am not taking care of myself, the rest of my life suffers- my relationships, my productivity, and most importantly my health!

So often, I feel like I move through my life without really paying attention. That is, until my body says, PAY ATTENTION!! So self care has moved to the top of my list and I have to work hard to make sure it stays there. This comes from finding the balance that works for my life at this moment so that I can do all the things I want to do for myself and my family. I started with self-care and built my other priorities around that. As other parts of my life become more important, the balance will shift.

That’s just it right?

Balance will look differently all the time depending on what is going on around you.

Funny thing about self care... it's the first to go when I am “too busy”. Why is that? To be honest, sometimes I feel judged for making it a priority. Sort of like when you go out to eat with a group of people and you choose to order a salad, only to get a glare from those around you... Let me ask you this, do you feel like you are able to take time for yourself without having to explain to someone? The good news is that I do think the culture around self care is changing and it is becoming important to more people.

My plan? Map it all out on my calendar. For better or worse, I have become attached to my calendar and it helps this mom brain know what is coming up. I am going to give it a try and see how it works when all the things I want to do are scheduled, allowing for the occasional impromptu picnic in the park with my kids or last minute dinner with friends of course. I’m planing this schedule around my top priorities and adding in everything else around those. Then I am going to reassess and make adjustments. Sometimes half the battle is just getting started!

So I empower you to get started! Find the balance you desire.
