Laura McMullin, Community Chief Officer
Greetings! I am Laura McMullin, mother of two awesome kiddos, wife to an amazing human, and a full time working Momma that is deeply passionate about mindfulness, wellbeing, and the positive evolution of human consciousness.
I have been in education for over 20 years. As a K-12 public school teacher, I taught in high-need urban schools in both Los Angeles and New York City. I was featured in the book Teaching to Change the World (Oakes & Lipton, 2003). I went from being a passionate, lively “star teacher” to being highly stressed, burned out, and depressed.
My burnout experience led me to pursue a PhD in Education at NYU where I studied stress and wellbeing. That is when I bumped into the robust scientific research around mindfulness and social emotional learning. It was in graduate school that I began practicing meditation on a consistent basis - 14 years ago.
In addition to being a contributor to The Mindful Mamas Club, I also work with UCLA’s Teacher Education Program and support the development of new teachers with a focus on wellbeing and self-care.
It amazes me how powerful mindfulness is, especially in motherhood. Through my daily practice, I am able to consciously engage with my family in kindness, compassion, and presence. When I feel out of alignment, I know how to deliberately shift back into peace and ease. I am forever grateful for this gift.
A bit about my personal training: I experienced Jon Kabat Zinn’s intensive eight week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course (MBSR) as well as Kristen Neff’s eight week Mindful Self-Compassion Course (MSC). Both were profound and transformative. I am in the Mindful School Training Program and throughout my journey, I have had the pleasure of leading guided meditations at the Deepak Chopra Center in New York City. I also designed and taught a course at UCLA on mindfulness and wellbeing and led weekly guided meditations for undergraduate students and teaching artists. I feel most at home guiding meditations with women and have enjoyed doing so in women’s circles and retreat settings.
It my absolute honor to be a part of the Mindful Mamas team and look forward to being with you on this beautiful journey.
